I doubt artists are making him lighter because they see it as better (amongst white people tanned skin is typically considered desirable), but clearly they do see Steve as white, which may imply some bias on their part.įair haired/red headed people have a massive tendency towards the kind of skin that burns before it tans, and they use lotion to prevent themselves from burning. Some reproductions of the character have lighter skin, which does seem a little questionable. Heavily tanned white people can easily look that dark, so it's simply ambiguious.
